When Your Shoulder Stops Moving, We Start Working

Patience, Warmth, and Skilled Hands

Frozen shoulder — clinically known as adhesive capsulitis — is one of the most frustrating conditions a person can experience. It starts subtly: a slight ache when you reach overhead, a stiffness when you try to put on a jacket, a twinge when you reach behind your back. Over weeks and months, the restriction progresses until simple movements like brushing your hair, fastening a seatbelt, or reaching for a shelf become painful or impossible. The shoulder capsule thickens and contracts, forming adhesions that physically prevent movement. It's not just stiffness — the joint is literally stuck.

Frozen shoulder typically progresses through three phases. The freezing phase brings increasing pain and progressively decreasing range of motion over 6 weeks to 9 months. The frozen phase features maximum stiffness with somewhat less pain, lasting 4 to 12 months. The thawing phase brings gradual return of movement over 6 months to 2 years. The entire process can last 1 to 3 years, and during that time, the affected arm becomes progressively less useful while the rest of the body develops compensatory patterns that create their own problems.

Massage therapy supports recovery during every phase. During the freezing phase, when pain is most intense, gentle work reduces the muscular guarding that develops around the restricted joint. The body instinctively tightens every muscle around the shoulder to protect it, but this guarding actually worsens the restriction by compressing the joint further. By carefully releasing the deltoid, upper trapezius, pectoralis, subscapularis, and rotator cuff muscles, massage creates space around the joint and reduces the compression that accelerates adhesion formation.

During the frozen and thawing phases, massage maintains the health of surrounding tissue while the capsule gradually loosens. The neck, upper back, and opposite shoulder all develop compensatory pain from months of carrying extra load, and addressing these secondary pain sites is essential for overall quality of life during recovery. Warming Himalayan salt stones are particularly valuable for frozen shoulder because deep heat improves the pliability of the thickened capsular tissue and increases blood flow to an area that adhesions often leave undernourished. Red light therapy supports cellular repair in the inflamed capsule tissue.

Every session at Soothe & Sage includes salt stones, red light therapy, cupping, steamed towels, aromatherapy, and warm packs at one flat rate with no add-on fees. Frozen shoulder is a long road — you don't have to walk it without support.
