Who Should Not Get Lymphatic Drainage?

Soothe & Sage

Safety, Contraindications & When to Ask Your Doctor

Your Safety Always Comes First

Lymphatic drainage massage is one of the gentlest forms of bodywork available — the pressure is lighter than Swedish massage, and it works with your body's natural systems rather than against them. For the vast majority of people, it's completely safe and beneficial. However, because lymphatic drainage actively moves fluid through your body, there are specific situations where it should be avoided or where physician clearance is needed first. Your safety is always my priority, and I want you to have the information you need to make an informed decision.

There are a small number of absolute contraindications — conditions where lymphatic drainage should not be performed. These include active infection or fever (because moving lymph fluid could potentially spread the infection through your body), acute deep vein thrombosis or known blood clots (because there's a theoretical risk of dislodging a clot), uncontrolled congestive heart failure (because adding fluid volume to an already overloaded circulatory system could be dangerous), active cellulitis (a spreading skin infection), and acute kidney failure (where the kidneys cannot process additional fluid). If you have any of these conditions, lymphatic drainage is not appropriate until the condition resolves or is controlled.

Then there are relative contraindications — situations where lymphatic drainage may be appropriate but requires physician clearance first. These include active cancer or current cancer treatment (your oncologist can advise), controlled heart conditions, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, recent surgery (clearance from your surgeon regarding timing), and pregnancy in the first trimester. In these cases, lymphatic drainage isn't necessarily unsafe, but your doctor needs to confirm it's appropriate for your specific situation.

For everyone else — which is the vast majority of people — lymphatic drainage is safe, gentle, and beneficial. This includes healthy adults of all ages, pregnant women in their second and third trimesters, post-surgical patients with surgeon clearance, people with lymphedema or chronic swelling, those with autoimmune conditions (during stable periods), and anyone dealing with bloating, water retention, or general puffiness. If you're healthy enough for a gentle walk, you're almost certainly healthy enough for lymphatic drainage.

As for side effects, lymphatic drainage is remarkably gentle. The most common responses are increased urination in the 24 hours following treatment (as your body processes mobilized fluid), mild fatigue or deep relaxation during and after the session, and occasionally a slight headache if you came in dehydrated. These are all normal, expected responses that indicate the treatment is working. Drinking water before and after your session helps minimize any detox-related symptoms.

Avoid If Active

Active infection/fever, blood clots (DVT), uncontrolled congestive heart failure, active cellulitis, or acute kidney failure. Wait until resolved or controlled before booking.

Get Clearance First

Active cancer treatment, heart conditions, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, very recent surgery, or first trimester pregnancy. A quick physician call provides peace of mind.

Safe for Most People

Healthy adults, 2nd/3rd trimester pregnancy, post-surgical patients (with clearance), chronic swelling, lymphedema, bloating, water retention, wellness maintenance, and immune support.

Normal Responses

Increased urination, mild fatigue, deep relaxation, and occasionally a light headache if dehydrated. These are signs the treatment is working and resolve quickly with water and rest.

When in Doubt, Ask

If you're unsure whether lymphatic drainage is appropriate for you, a quick call to your physician provides peace of mind. You can also call or text me at 509-263-6099 to discuss your situation before booking. Your safety and comfort always come first.
