Your hips are the central connection point between your upper and lower body, and when they're tight or painful, you feel it everywhere. Hip pain can make walking feel labored, sitting uncomfortable, and sleeping nearly impossible if you can't find a position that doesn't press on something that aches. Hip flexor tightness is one of the most widespread conditions in modern life, and it's driven by the one thing most of us do more than anything else: sitting.
The psoas — your deepest hip flexor — connects your lumbar spine to your femur, crossing through the pelvis. When you sit for hours, it stays shortened, and over time it adapts by becoming chronically tight. This pulls the pelvis into an anterior tilt, which compresses the low back, changes your gait, and creates a cascade of compensations that can show up as hip pain, low back pain, knee pain, or all three. The tensor fasciae latae and IT band along the outside of the hip can become tight from both sitting and running, creating lateral hip pain that's often mistaken for joint problems. Pelvic-tilt muscle imbalances and hip hiking tension further complicate the picture.
When I work on hip pain, I address every muscle that connects to or crosses the hip joint — the psoas, iliacus, TFL, adductors, glutes, piriformis, and the deep external rotators. Each of these muscles plays a role in how your hip moves, and tightness in any one of them can restrict mobility and create pain. Cupping on the lateral hip and glutes helps decompress tissue that's been compressed by sitting, while targeted pressure releases the psoas and iliacus from their chronically shortened state.
Red light therapy reduces the inflammation that builds in overworked hip tissue, and warm salt stones deliver deep heat into the dense gluteal and hip muscles. Here in Spokane, I see tight hips from desk workers, runners, hikers, cyclists, and new parents who spend hours carrying little ones on one hip. My own hips remind me after long walks with our four dogs just how quickly this tension accumulates.
Every session at Soothe & Sage includes cupping, red light therapy, salt stones, steamed towels, aromatherapy, and warm packs at one flat rate with no add-on fees. If your hips have been holding you back, let's unlock them together.
