When the Muscles Around Your Knee Need Attention

Support from Every Angle

Knee pain is one of those conditions that can make you feel decades older than you are. Climbing stairs becomes a negotiation, kneeling is out of the question, and even walking on uneven ground requires constant awareness. What many people don't realize is that the knee itself is often the victim rather than the cause of the problem. The muscles above and below the knee — the quads, hamstrings, IT band, calves, and even the hip muscles — control how the knee tracks, loads, and moves. When those muscles are out of balance, the knee pays the price.

Runner's knee and patellofemoral pain are classic examples. When the outer quad (vastus lateralis) and IT band become tighter than the inner quad (VMO), they pull the kneecap laterally, causing it to track improperly in its groove. The result is a grinding, aching pain around and behind the kneecap that worsens with stairs, squats, and prolonged sitting. IT band syndrome creates a sharp pain on the outside of the knee as the tight band snaps across the lateral femoral condyle during repeated bending and straightening. Patellar tendonitis and jumper's knee develop when the quad muscles and their tendon attachment below the kneecap become chronically overloaded.

Massage therapy addresses knee pain by releasing the muscles that are pulling the joint out of alignment. I work the entire chain — from the hip and glutes down through the quads, IT band, hamstrings, calves, and the muscles that attach directly around the knee. Cupping along the IT band and lateral thigh is one of the most effective techniques for IT band-related knee pain, providing a decompressive lift that stretching alone can't match. Red light therapy applied directly to the knee reduces inflammation in the joint and surrounding tendons.

For clients dealing with knee osteoarthritis pain, post-hike soreness, or muscle guarding around an injured knee, massage helps maintain mobility and reduce the protective tension that limits flexion and extension. Here in Spokane, where hiking, skiing, and outdoor activity are part of daily life, knee pain is something I treat year-round. Limited knee flexion from tight quads and limited knee extension from tight hamstrings are both highly responsive to skilled bodywork.

Every session at Soothe & Sage includes cupping, red light therapy, salt stones, steamed towels, aromatherapy, and warm packs at one flat rate with no add-on fees. If your knees have been holding you back, let's address what's actually causing the pain.

Patellar Tracking

Releasing tight lateral quads and IT band while supporting the VMO helps restore proper kneecap tracking and reduces patellofemoral pain.

IT Band Relief

Cupping and deep tissue work on the IT band reduces the lateral knee pain of IT band syndrome and improves the band's ability to glide freely.

Tendon Recovery

Red light therapy reduces inflammation in the patellar tendon and surrounding structures, supporting recovery from tendonitis and jumper's knee.

Mobility Restoration

Releasing the muscles above and below the knee restores flexion and extension range, reducing stiffness and improving comfort during daily activities.

Red Light + Cupping for Knees, Always Free

Red light therapy on inflamed knee tissue and cupping along the IT band are two of the most effective tools for knee pain. At Soothe & Sage, both are included with every session — no add-on fees for the care your knees need.
