Massage frequency guide at Soothe and Sage in Spokane WA

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

Soothe & Sage

Finding Your Ideal Frequency

The Answer Depends on You

"How often should I come in?" is the question I get asked most, and the honest answer is: it depends on what your body needs and what you're trying to achieve. There's no universal schedule that works for everyone because everyone's body, stress levels, activity levels, and goals are different. But after over a decade of working with hundreds of bodies, I can give you clear guidance based on what consistently produces the best results for different situations.

If you're dealing with chronic pain, acute injury recovery, or high stress levels, every two weeks is the sweet spot to start. At this frequency, your body retains most of the gains from the previous session before the next one builds on them. The tension doesn't have time to fully rebuild, the nervous system stays more regulated between visits, and each session can go deeper and accomplish more because it's working with tissue that's already partially released. For clients with severe chronic pain or acute post-surgical recovery, weekly sessions during the initial phase produce the fastest results, then gradually spacing to biweekly as the body stabilizes.

For athletes and active individuals, the ideal frequency depends on training intensity. During heavy training blocks or competition season, every two weeks keeps tissues healthy and prevents overuse injuries from developing. During lighter training periods, monthly maintenance is usually sufficient. If you're training for a specific event — a marathon, a triathlon, a CrossFit competition — ramping up to weekly in the weeks before the event and scheduling a recovery session within 48 hours after produces the best performance and recovery outcomes.

For general wellness, stress management, and prevention, monthly massage is the minimum effective frequency. Coming in once a month gives your body a regular reset that keeps tension from accumulating to problematic levels, supports your sleep quality, helps manage everyday stress, and catches developing issues before they become real problems. Many of my regular clients here in Spokane describe their monthly session as the thing that keeps everything else working — a reset that makes the rest of the month more manageable.
